Hearing a Vibration or Grinding Coming from Your Wheels?

Have you started to notice a grinding or vibrating noise or feeling coming from your wheels while you drive? There are a variety of possible reasons for this phenomenon—the problem could lie with the tires, or it could be an issue with a different part of your vehicle.

Here are just a few of the main causes of vibrating wheels and what to do if the back or front wheel in your car is making noise in New Palestine, IN.

Issues with the wheels

Your steering system controls the operation of your wheels. The tires move and rotate along with the wheels because they are attached. You will need to check and see if there has been any damage done to any of the wheel components if you hear strange noises while driving that seem to be coming from your wheels.

Make sure to pay special attention to the wheel bearings—they may be worn out or otherwise damaged. Check tie rod ends and ball joints as well to see if they have worn out over time. If so, they could be the source of your noise. You may even notice that the vibrations make it difficult for you to keep driving straight—this is one more sign that the issue likely lies in a wheel component.

Issues with your tires

If the problem does not appear to be with the wheels or wheel components, then it could be with the actual tires. Worn tire treads or low air pressure can cause the vehicle to shake due to uneven positioning on the road. If your tires are worn out, it’s important for you to replace them as soon as possible so you can make sure there’s still plenty of friction between the rubber and the road to keep you safe. Otherwise, if the issue is just with the air pressure, this should be an easy fix—go to your nearest gas station and fill up the tires to the appropriate levels using the air compressor.

Issues with an axle

If you have an axle that is bent or damaged, this will result in the creation of a lot of vibrations of the tires, regardless of the speed at which you’re driving. You might have damaged the axle in a car accident or if you ran over a large rock or curb. The shaking will likely get worse as you accelerate, but it will be noticeable at lower speeds as well. In most cases, you’ll need to replace the axle.

Issues with the brakes

If you notice the issues exacerbate when you apply the brakes, this could mean you actually have worn-down brake pads or an issue with the brake rotors. You should have a mechanic inspect your brakes to determine if they need to be serviced.
