How Often Should You Replace Brake Pads?

We don’t often think about our brake pads, and we shouldn’t have to — at least until it is time to change them. Many professionals advise changing your brakes every ten to twenty thousand miles.

For too many of us, however, we wait until we hear that pleasant sound of metal on metal. In case you weren’t sure, if you are hearing anything that sounds like grinding when you hit your brake pedal, then you have waited too long, or there’s a problem.

How Often Should I Change Brake Pads?

The key to keeping your brakes reliable and working well, especially when you need them most, is to replace them regularly.

That is also where the aforementioned advice from professional brake specialists suggested changing our brakes between 10,000 and 20,000 miles. While this also ensures the best working condition for our brakes, it also creates less wear and tear on other parts of the braking system and vehicle.

Knowing when to replace brake pads, though, is about safety first and foremost. While most brakes will work well beyond that ten thousand mile threshold, when they stop working at maximum efficiency is another question altogether.

Replace Your Brake Pads Regularly

Many variables are factored into how long brake pads can last. How much in-town, stop-and-start, or braking do you do on a normal day? How many of the miles that you drive are freeway miles, requiring less or infrequent braking?

These are just a few of the factors that will go into the frequency of how often you need to get your brake pads replaced. Replacing your brake pads regularly, however, is the only way to be certain that you will get the best performance out of your brakes when you need them.
